The origins of the cravat lie in the military. It originated in 17th Croatia long before the bow tie or traditional tie. During the reign of Louis XIII of France, Croatian mercenaries fought to support Louis and Cardinal Richelieu against the Duc de Guise and the Queen Mother, Marie de Medici. The Parisians were very taken with these unusual, decorative scarves the Croatians wore knotted at their throats. The fabrics varied in quality according to the status of the wearer, enlisted men wore cravats of course fabric while the officer wore only fine linen and silks.
The sartorial word 'Cravat' comes from the French 'cravate' a corrupt French pronunciation of 'Croat' - in Croatian,'Hr̀vāt'.
How to tie your cravat.
1. Drape your cravat around your neck, keeping the long end on your right. 2. Take the long end across over the short end, to the left. 3. Take the long end back underneath the short end. 4. Wrap the long end over the top again to the left . 5. Take the long end up through the neck loop. 6. Fold down the long end over the knot, arranging the fit with the shorter end and fixing in place with a cravat pin. 7. Adjust the fit with the underneath end keeping the knot is loose to create an elegant effect.
